A really effective opening with quiet and evocative imagery.
Efficient character work in showing the family’s reaction to the death. The mother’s reason for crying, and the father and brother’s reason for not crying, reveal a lot about how they see the world.
The narrator’s reaction to the death also gives a window into her mind. The way she imagines being an older sister is tragic and endearing.
Really drawn in by the stark language and simple imagery.
Verdict: Worth reading.
